Abstract
TOEIC is a standardized test which evaluates the test takers in listening and reading comprehension. This research focuses on the use of TOEIC wordlist from NGSLT and its application to improve the score of the students in non-English majors in the mandatory subject which aims to ensure the students reach at least the score 500 to be considered “ready” for job application. The purposes of this research are 1) to assess the lexical knowledge of the students in terms of TOEIC vocabulary, 2) to find out the number of students in
each score ranges using pre-test and actual TOEIC test, and 3) to estimate the number of students who are potentially “ready”. In this research, the students who get a total score of 500 or above in pre-test and actual TOEIC test are considered ready. Additionally, the difference of 0-50 is the margin of error in measurement stated by ETS, which is used to ensure the reliability of the data. The instruments used in this research consist of pre-test, vocabulary exercises, and the actual TOEIC test. The whole process takes 4 months starting from having pre-test until the actual test. The results show that (1) the majority of the students who study ENL-212 potentially know at least 500 words from the 1000 essential words for TOEIC test, (2) the majority of the students in the pre-test ranges from 255-550 for a total of 65.92% while the majority of the students in the actual test is in the ranges of 205-450 for a total of 61.33%, 3) Only 182 students in the pre-test and 139 students in the actual test get into the range of 500-990 and only 167 students attain stable score among 481 students with only 0-50 difference when comparing the score from pre-test and actual test.
