Factors Affecting EFL Learners’Anxieties in English Speaking

Abstract

The study’s objectives were 1) to investigate factors affecting EFL learners’ anxieties in English speaking in three aspects: Learner Factor, Teaching and Learning Factor, and Family Factor 2) to compare factors affecting EFL learners’ anxieties in English speaking in three aspects based on students’ faculty and gender, and 3) to compile additional suggestions. 420 Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI) students from the second semester of the 2023 academic year served as research samples, which were originated from simple random sampling technique. The open-ended questionnaire and the rating scale were the tools utilized to collect the data. The data were analyzed using the following statistics: frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, f-test, and content analysis. The findings were as follows: 1) Factors affecting EFL learners’ anxieties in English speaking were at moderate level. After considering each aspect, it was discovered that Learner Factor and Teaching and Learning Factor were at moderate level, while Family Factor was at low level. 2) The students with different genders pointed out that there were significant differences. When considering each aspect, all aspects showed statistically significant differences at .05 level. 3) The students with different faculties showed statistically significant differences in overall at .05. When considering each aspect, it was found that there were statistically significant differences at .05 level in all aspects; Learner Factor, Teaching and Learning Factor, and Family Factor. Additionally, there were 2 pairs of different faculties in Learner Factor and Teaching and Learning Factor. There was 1 pair of different faculties in Family Factor. 4) Further recommendations from Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (TNI) students were as follows: the students struggle to come up with proper vocabulary while they are speaking English, the students experience nervousness when speaking in public in English, and the students concern about Grammar mistakes when they speak English.
